Technical Path and Application Strategy of Foam Board to Prevent Deformation

Foam board (common types include polystyrene foam EPS, extruded polystyrene foam XPS, etc.) is widely used in building insulation, product packaging, cold chain logistics and other fields due to its light weight, excellent thermal insulation and cushioning performance, but the deformation problem will directly weaken its function - such as the deformation of the thermal insulation layer reduces the thermal insulation efficiency of the wall, and the deformation of the packaging foam causes damage to the inner products. To solve the deformation problem of foam board, it is necessary to systematically implement measures from the dimensions of material intrinsic characteristics, environmental adaptation, and structural design. The core is to crack the deformation incentives in a targeted manner.

The core causes of foam board deformation can be divided into three categories: first, material structural defects, uneven cell distribution during foaming, insufficient closed cell rate, resulting in poor molecular chain stability and weak resistance to external forces, temperature and humidity; second, environmental impact, temperature exceeding the plate heat resistance threshold will soften the bubble wall, the mechanical strength of the bubble after water absorption in high humidity environment decreases, and large fluctuations in temperature and humidity will also cause the material to absorb moisture, expand, dry shrink and crack; third, external force, long-term load-bearing, local concentrated stress or impact load will lead to compression deformation or deformation of the foam board.

To prevent the deformation of the foam board, it is necessary to start from multiple links:

1. Optimize material formulations and production processes to enhance intrinsic stability

By adjusting the ratio of the foaming agent and adopting cross-linking modification technology, the rigidity of the molecular chain of the foam board can be enhanced, and the heat resistance can be improved. The glass transition temperature of the modified EPS can be raised to more than 80 ° C to avoid softening and deformation at room temperature. At the same time, strictly control the pressure and temperature of the foaming process, improve the closed cell rate (such as XPS closed cell rate can reach more than 95%), reduce water infiltration, and reduce the risk of wet deformation from the structure; choose the appropriate density of the board according to the application requirements, and choose high-density foam board with a density of more than 30kg/m ³ in the load-bearing scene to avoid excessive compression deformation of the low-density board.

2. Adapt to the use environment to reduce external interference

For high-temperature working conditions (such as industrial equipment insulation), heat-resistant modified foam boards are used to isolate direct heat sources through heat insulation layers; outdoor foam boards need to be waterproof treated, such as coated with acrylic waterproof coatings or composite aluminum foil barrier layers, to block rain infiltration and avoid damage to the bubble wall after water absorption; when storing in warehouses, control the ambient humidity between 40% and 60% to avoid dimensional deformation caused by high humidity or alternating wet and dry, and at the same time avoid direct sunlight to slow down the degradation of molecular structures by ultraviolet rays.

3. Rational design of structure and use, dispersion of stress

In the insulation of building exterior walls, anchors are used with keel fixed foam board to disperse the surface load to the base wall to avoid the board being compressed by gravity for a long time; in the packaging field, the lining structure is customized according to the weight of the product, and the cushioning support is designed separately for heavy parts to avoid local stress concentration; to avoid the use of large-scale thin foam boards in the air, reinforcing ribs can be added internally or divided into unit structures to improve the overall rigidity and reduce bending deformation.

4. Standardize storage and transportation management

When storing, use flat ground stacking, and the stacking height does not exceed the pressure limit of the board to avoid local depression. During transportation, use a fixed device to bind the foam board to the load-bearing structure to reduce the deformation caused by collision and avoid direct contact with sharp and high-temperature objects.

In summary, the anti-deformation of foam board is a multi-dimensional collaborative system engineering. It is necessary to optimize the material research and development, adapt the use environment, refine the structural design, and standardize the management of the whole process in order to effectively improve the dimensional stability of foam board, ensure its functional performance, and extend the service life.
